The Egyptian goddesses within this set of notecards are from the Pantheon Egyptien, written by Jean Francois Champollion (1790-1832). Champollion, a scholar who was the first translator of hieroglyphics and famous for deciphering the Rosetta Stone, was the original keeper of the Egyptian department of the Musee du Louvre. Leon Jean Joseph Dubois, draftsman and later Conservator of Egyptian Antiquities, also at the Louvre, executed the illustrations. Dubois's bold renderings of the goddesses featured in these notecards, accompanied by the informative text of Richard A. Fazini, Chair, the Department of Egyptian, Classical, and Ancient Middle Eastern Art, offer brilliant insight into ancient Egyptian culture. The images originally appeared in a fifteen-volume set issued between 1823 and 1825 by Firman Didot, a Parisian publishing house. These rare volumes are from the collection of the Wilbour Library of Egyptology in the Brooklyn Museum of Art.
