Wonderfully complex, rich in symbolism, and beautifully executed, Ganga Devi’s ink paintings spring from the traditional wedding chamber decorations of her childhood home in the Himalayan foothills. But while they recall tradition, these images ultimately reflect the artist’s travels and unique life experience. The Mithila region of northern Bihar in India was home to the tradition of painting the walls of the kohbar-ghar (nuptial chamber) with symbolic images of the lotus plant, the bamboo grove, fishes, birds, and snakes in union—all representing fertility and the proliferation of life. The paintings were done collectively by the women of the bride’s family and of the village and caste.
