Ephat Mujuru

'When the mbira is played,' the late Ephat Mujuru once said, 'it brings the two worlds together, the world of our ancestors and the world of today.' A master of the African mbira, Mujuru was taught to play this xylophone-like instrument by his grandfather, at the age of seven; at 14, he formed a band called Chaminuka (later named Spirit of the People following Zimbabwe's independence in 1980). Mujuru focused on the mbira dzavadzimu, an instrument with 22 iron prongs arranged in three register banks that he said represents 'the voice of the children, voice of the adults, and voice of the elders.'
