OHITIKA WOMAN OHITIKA WOMAN (Code #RFD990P)

Mary Brave Bird

Picking up where the bestselling Lakota Woman, the winner of the 1991 American Book Award, left off, Ohitika Woman continues Mary Brave Bird’s personal story of courage, anguish and triumph. Mingling stories of her ancestors with those of her grandchildren, she talks about the breakdown of her marriage to Leonard Crow Dog, raising children when she wasn’t sure where her next dollar would come from, her battle with alcoholism, and, finally, her recent happiness. It is a memoir filled with contrast - between the ancient Sioux religion and christianity, and between the traditional tribal patriarchy and women struggling for a sense of self and freedom. Angry, ironic and passionate, Ohitika Woman is a powerful testament to one woman’s spirit and endurance. Highly recommended. Remainder mark.

THE POWER DECK: The Cards of Wisdom THE POWER DECK: The Cards of Wisdom (Code #RWX1005)

Lynn V. Andrews

To heal the earth, we must first heal ourselves. 'The Power Deck,' writes Lynn Andrews, 'helps you find the primal source of your pain or limitation, so that it can be healed. Pick a card each morning and place it on your altar of empowerment. When you look at it, you will stop for a moment to move into that silent place within you, that place where truth is born. Each card promotes beauty, health, strength and wisdom in your life.' The Power Deck builds self-esteem by displaying positive and negative aspects of the user's personality - the pieces of the personal puzzle that are present and those that are missing. Each card features imagery reflecting Mother Earth and Father Sky, along with an affirmation that conveys the lesson of power and facilitates meditation. Remainder mark.

ROAD TO THE SUNDANCE: My Journey into Native Spirituality ROAD TO THE SUNDANCE: My Journey into Native Spirituality (Code #RFD123)

Manny Twofeathers

A casual account of intensely painful ceremonial rituals that provide pathways to the spiritual world of the Shoshoni and Lakota peoples. The usual picture of religious self-flagellation pales compared with what Twofeathers, a Native spiritual leader and craftsman, undergoes to achieve a higher understanding. Writing in a relaxed conversational prose, Twofeathers describes how, at urgings from the spirit world, he began to immerse himself in the yearly Sundance rituals held throughout the West. At first, his participation in the Shoshoni ritual merely required him to dance nearly continuously under a hot sun for four days, whthout food or water. Graduating to the Lakota ceremony, Twofeathers has his chest pierced with bones to which ropes are affixed, tying Twofeathers to a sacred tree; running backwards at full speed is the painful means of seaparating from the tree. But there's more. Twofeathers also has his back piereced to enable him to drag up to eight buffalo skulls four times around a sacred arbor. As a veteran of these practices, Twofeathers comes to regard himself as a healer (to the amazement of doctors, he dissolves his agonizing gallstones and somewhat alleviates his high blood pressure and diabetic problems through spiritual medicine), a seer, and a counselor, whose services are sought after within the Native American community. Paralleling his account of these rites is the tale of his success as a craftsman of ``medicine wheels'' and ``dream catchers,'' which are eagerly snapped up at craft fairs and New Age gatherings, and the saga of his unhappy family life, which is finally stabilized, thanks in large part to his flesh sacrifices. A modest and likeable narrator, Twofeathers avoids the self- righteous polemics sometimes found in this genre, and while the gorier sections are initially jolting, his aplomb in withstanding pain and coming back for more lends a certain normalcy to this ritual." - Kirkus Reviews

SACRED BEAT: From the Heart of the Drumming Circle SACRED BEAT: From the Heart of the Drumming Circle (Code #RFD943)

Patricia Telesco & Don Waterhawk

The beat is universal - drumming as a way of communicating with other people, spirits, and self exists around the world and throughout time. Sacred Beat honors and explores every aspect of drumming - historical, contemporary, practical. In Part I, Telesco and Waterhawk tell the history of drums and drumming circles and the myths, superstitions, and religions that have grown up around drumming. From West Africa to Tibet, from Siberia to England, from Vietnam to Apache territory come stories about drums, their invention, their use up until contemporary times. People respond almost universally and profoundly to drums - to relieve stress, to communicate, to move in rhythm with the universe, to praise their gods. A comprehensive section of practical information follows, with ideas for finding a drum and other rhythmic tools that are right for your vision, caring for and decorating your instrument, drum etiquette, and elements of a good drum circle. The next section of Sacred Beat is all about drumming in groups - different ways it’s being done, from Native American Pow-Wows to Goddess gatherings to community centers, and how to become a part of it. The book closes with a section on creating drumming magic all your own, with meditations, prayers, and divinations to create overall well-being and spiritual awareness with drums.

SACRED MANHOOD, SACRED EARTH SACRED MANHOOD, SACRED EARTH (Code #RWF0178)

Joseph Jastrab

Teacher, counselor, and wilderness guide Jastrab entwines his story of personal awakening with the firsthand accounts of a group of men as they participate in a contemporary heroic rite of passage called the Vision Quest. A deep soul hunger lives in the hearts of many men today. A hunger for meaning, for community, for life inspired by vision and fired with passion. For a courageous and adventureous few, these longings spark a journey that leads beyond the familiar boundaries of prescribed social roles into a mythological wilderness fraught with inner demons, allies, and numious power. It is a quest that celebrates more defeats than victories, more questions than answers. Yet only by undertaking such a journey can a man hope to walk a "path with heart," wherein he returns true to himself, to the earth, and to those who walk with him. What fragments of this age-old quest are with us today? Who are the men drawn to embark on this journey? And what have they discovered in themselves for us all? In this remarkable book, Joseph Jastab tells the story of the Quest. Its origins, its insights, and its profound impact on the hearts of the men it has touched. Slightly shop soiled.

SECRETS OF THE TALKING JAGUAR: A Mayan Shaman's Journey to the Heart of the Indigenous Soul SECRETS OF THE TALKING JAGUAR: A Mayan Shaman's Journey to the Heart of the Indigenous Soul (Code #RED346P)

Martin Prechtel

After finding his wife in the arms of a rich white man, Prechtel, a half-breed Native American, experiences 10 days of exceptionally vivid dreams, before setting off to wander, moneyless but happier, through Mexico. Eventually, after many adventures and tight spots, (including being prevented from boarding a bus, which later crashes with all lives lost, by a seemingly crazy old road-sweeper, who held him in a vice like grip even when the bus conductor rained kicks on his ribs and kidneys) he arrives in Guatemala and the Mayan village of Santiago Atitlan, which he immediately recognises as the place he has seen so vividly in his dreams. One day as he approaches the local market he feels someone grab his collarbone muscles so hard he falls to his knees. "How come you came late, Curly? For two years I've been calling you," says the voice of Nicolas Chiviliu Tacaxoy, an old Mayan well into his eighties, and possibly the most famous shaman in Tzutujil Mayan history. So begins an incredible story, in which Prechtel undergoes intense shamanic training, rising to become a village chief and famous shaman in his own right. If this were all that is in this book, it would be a book well worth reading, but there is more. For it describes a culture of great beauty, where its leaders, rather than seeking reward, give up all in service of their people, returning to normal life once their resources and monies are exhausted, education seeks to teach how to live a life of balance, and the language itself is like a poem, a song, every sentence like a lover courting a beloved. Although this culture has now largely been destroyed, by 30 years of war, in which traditional peoples were often murderously targetted as being a barrier to progress (more than 1800 of the villagers died in this meaningless slaughter), and even more years of missionary zealotry which belittled Mayan traditions and forbade even the weaving of traditional ceremonial clothing, there is much in this book to teach all people about how to live a good life, a life of humanity. "It's a precious thing, this book. I've never known another like it. It's a great encyclopedia of beauty... " - Robert Bly.
