DRUMMING - EN LA BOTÁNICA MAGICA
Ref: M442CD
Eric Casillas
A botánica is a shop specialising in a variety of potions, candles, charms, herbs, plants, books and other articles used in the spiritual world. Look on a display shelf and youll see Native American herbs and sage resting comfortably next to a statue of what appears to be the Roman Catholic saint, Santa Barbara. But it turns out Santa Barbara actually represents the African deity Chango. Clients of botánica dont discriminate among the possible cures for what ails them. A Cuban may buy some Native American sage, if theyve heard about its healing powers. Eric Casillas followed the same approach in putting together the music on Drumming En La Botánica Magia. For instance Ya-Ta-Hey is composed of three distinct African rhythms, but along with the rhythms Casillas chants ya-ta-hey the traditional Navajo greeting, while Ben Tavera King interjects the Native American Flute. Essentially, Casillass music represents the microcosm of spiritual and cultural influences found in a botánica.

FEET IN THE SOIL: Volume 2
Ref: BX12CD
James Asher
Feet in the Soil 2 is a celebration of the Aboriginal/African lifestyles; it's also drum playing for the enjoyment of it. James Asher takes trance music and examines it in different forms, from the organic, tribal sound of indigenous percussive instrumentation like bongos and djembes to modern synthesized elements that have captivated DJ's and club music fans. The latter shines through on "African Sun," a very upbeat, keyboard-friendly song that blends a pop mentality with modern trance while percussion heavy pieces like "Janjara" and "Standing Ngomo" take the more traditional approach with entrancing, yet simplistic drum beat structures.

TANTRA DRUMS
Ref: AB118
Al Gromer Khan
Another excellent album from the master of soundscape, Al Gromer Khan, whose previous two albums Monsoon Point and Space Hotel, have become widely-acclaimed best-sellers, each with their own, utterly unique flavour. In Tantra Drums Khan probes the true meaning of tantra (which, he says, has been obscured by therapists and pornographers) and has come up with a sultry and dreamy mix of rhythms and soundscapes. Here are 10 pieces of music that are at the same time nostalgic and futuristic, subtle and soft-techno, spiritual and erotic.
